Folk Clubs

of the Harrogate and Knaresborough area

For over 50 years a number of clubs in Harrogate, Knaresborough and nearby have been home to a vibrant folk singing community, nurturing local talent like Robin and Barry Dransfield. This site is your place to jog some memories and share some recollections.
The Dransfields

In addition to the clubs, Harrogate's larger halls have hosted some fine evenings of folk music. A series of concerts at the Royal Hall included appearances by respected singers like Bert Lloyd, Fred Jordan, Louis Killen and Anne Briggs (who allegedly jumped offstage in order to evade the local constabulary!). Harrogate Theatre was the venue for folk-rock legends Steeleye Span, plus the memorable Alive and Kicking show by local performers. In recent years singers such as Dave Burland have played to packed houses at Knaresborough's Frazer Theatre. See here for some info on forthcoming events.

Arguably, though, folk music is at its best in the intimate atmosphere of the pubs. You can find (and contribute to) information on local clubs in the navigation column on the left. There are links to pages hosting information on several venues, with pictures, sound and video clips.

This site is in itself like a folk club: you don't have to participate, but it'll be even better if you join in. There is a page about this site with some guidance on how to add new content or edit existing entries. From tone-deaf to pitch-perfect, any contributions will be most welcome!
