Leeds Folk Clubs: by Hugh Taylor.
I first started going to folk clubs in Leeds around 1965. The first one was in a pub on Boar Lane hosted by Jon Rennard. I still had his LP up to a few years ago. we then started going to the Club Memphis in the RAOB club run by Johnny Wall. He alter moved it to the Irish Centre on York Road. Occasionally we'd visit the Brig Club at the Adelphi near Leeds Bridge, run by Bob and Hazel Spray. Bob used to sing in the Croppy Boys along with Jim Potter and Rennie Pickles.

    Clubs - York
I was involved in running The Lowther Hotel Folk Club from around 1966 until we became York Folk Centre in 1970. We had a very good relationship with Harrogate Folk Club in those days and we booked a number of singers from there. I partcularly remember booking both Dransfields for Expenses and beer money! A lot of people were members of both Clubs; I remember in particular Pete Jubb and Roy Swales.. The copy magazine which you show brought back a lot of memories, especially regarding who we booked in those days when some of us still regarded Peter, Paul and Mary as singers of Folk Music, and Dylan had still to go electric ("Bobby Dylan has a voice much like a dog with its ta, The Dillards)il trapped in barbed wire" - quote - The Dillards.)
I'll put more when my memory returns again, or possibly after Heatherdene tonight!

    folk club venue
Iseem to remember that the Harrogate Folk Club had a spell at the bar behind the Opera House in the late 60s/early 70s? I remember that Mike Preston was a key figure there.Purely out of academic interest, I also remember that Dave the Mormon fiddle player from the Crimple Mountain Boys ran seminars on Appalachian mountain music in one of the side rooms at the West Park Hotel. The room was known locally as the Taj Mahal room on account of its exotic decoration.

    Hi Bob

Thanks for this. I'm hoping we can get a Ripon page organised soon, there seems to have been plenty going on. At present there are a few bits of info on the "various" page.

    cheers
